All completed application materials are due by January 15. Application review will begin directly following the January 15 deadline. The admissions process will be completed by April 15. Only completed applications will be reviewed and considered for admission.


Admission Requirements


Statement of Purpose - All applicants are required to submit the SOP.


GRE - The GRE is required of all applicants. While there are no strict minimum required scores, we look for scores close to:


"Old" Version of GREs:
Verbal – 500
Quantitative – 750
Analytical – 5.0


"New" Version of GREs:
Verbal - 153
Quantitative - 159
Analytical - 5.0


The Subjective portion of the GRE is not required.


TOEFL -IBT version of the TOEFL (for international or non-English speaking students)


For the IBT TOEFL, you must meet the following minimum required scores as determined by the Cornell Graduate School in each of the following sections in order to be considered for admission to our field:
Listening - 15
Writing - 20
Reading - 20
Speaking - 22


If you are not able to meet or exceed the minimum scores in each of the four sections of the IBT TOEFL, you will not be considered eligible for admission to Cornell University. No exceptions will be made.


You may only be considered eligible for a TOEFL waiver if you have studied full-time for two (2) or more consecutive years (a minimum of four (4) consecutive semesters) at a college or university were English is the language of instruction located in a country where English is the native language (including English-speaking Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK).


Every other country, including the India subcontinent, Singapore, the Anglophone Caribbean, Anglophone Africa, Francophone Canada and Puerto Rico, do **NOT** qualify for a TOEFL exemption, as per the Cornell Graduate School.


GRE and TOEFL scores must be official test results; photocopies are not acceptable. Scores need to be submitted directly to the Cornell Graduate School by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Cornell's institutional code for the TOEFL and GRE is 2098; the Departmental Code for ECE is 1203.


Recommendation Letters - A total of two (2) Letters of Recommendation are to be submitted. It is strongly suggested that they both be from faculty. The online application system default will only allow for the submission of two letters. If you wish to include a third letter, you may have your Recommender submit it directly to Scott Coldren via email as a PDF only (no other formats will be accepted) at sec36@cornell.edu.


Transcripts - One (1) from each university you have attended. Each transcript must be translated into English. You should plan to upload a scanned copy in PDF format in your online application. No hard copy Transcripts will need to be submitted.
You may upload a scanned copy of your transcript into the CollegeNet Online Application System. Please use the following guidelines to do so:
Scan at the lowest dpi document (use under 200 dpi whenever possible).
Ensure that the institution name and other identifying marks are not missed during the scanning process, and that it is clearly legible and can print on 8 ½" x 11" size paper.
Save your document as a PDF file.
Scanning in gray scale or black and white may produce the best results.
If you upload a scanned copy of your transcript, you do NOT have to provide an official hard copy version to accompany your application. You will only need to provide an official hard copy transcript if you are made an offer of admission and you choose to accept it.
If the scanned file is too large then make a photocopy first then scan the photocopy.


GPA - The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.5/4.0.


Resume or CV - Optional


DO NOT submit hard copy materials of any kind.


Early Admission Policy


If you are a Cornell Undergraduate student and are interested in learning more about the 'Early Admission' option, please visit the College of Engineering's web site to learn more. Please note that this policy is NOT for students outside of the Cornell University community.


In addition to the College of Engineering's policy, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department also has its own procedures that we require all 'Early Admission' candidates to follow. They are as follows:
ECE Undergraduate Students applying for the Early Admission Option for the 1-year M.Eng Program must have between 1 - 8 credits left to complete in their undergraduate degree program in the second semester of their Senior Year in order to be considered eligible.
Students may earn no more than a total of eight (8) credit hours towards their M.Eng Degree Program during their Early Admission Semester. Early Admission Applicants will be required to submit their completed application materials differently than normal applicants (see below).
When choosing the correct term/semester to apply for as an Early Admission student in the Cornell online graduate application, the correct term/semester to choose would be the actual first semester as an M.Eng Student (i.e. the semester after all undergraduate degree requirements are completed). The 'Early Admission Semester' is the student's final semester of their Senior Year


Spring Term - Early Admission Semester (Fall / Spring M.Eng Program)
This option would apply to students whose final semester of their Senior Year and their Early Admission semester would occur during the Spring.
Applicants will be required to submit their completed application materials by November 1st.
A completed Early Admission Petition Form will also be required along with all completed materials. An Early Admission Petition Form should propose a full 2-semester course work plan along with a 2-semester Design Project Plan to commence in the first semester as a registered M.Eng Student. Upon approval by the M.Eng Committee, this will be the Student's contract with ECE. Any subsequent changes to the agreed upon and approved plan will require further review and approval by the M.Eng Committee.
Early Admission Applicants will be required to schedule a 5 - 10 minute interview session with the ECE M.Eng Director in order to establish their plan and intentions. Interviews will be held during the month of November.
Early Admission Applicants will be discouraged to try and complete their M.Eng Program with only one semester as an actual registered M.Eng Student (by utilizing their final semester of their Senior year to fulfill minimal undergraduate requirements, while taking courses to be used towards their M.Eng Degree). For all intents and purposes, this will make it appear as if the Student will have actually earned a M.Eng Degree in only one semester, and as a consequence, could potentially make the degree program seem weaker by potential employers.
Early Admission Applicants will be provided with their admission decision prior to the beginning of finals at the end of the Fall Semester.


Fall Term - Early Admission Semester (Spring / Fall M.Eng Program)
This option would apply to students whose final semester of their Senior year and their Early Admission semester would occur during the Fall.
Applicants will be required to submit their completed application materials by normal deadline of January 15th.
A completed Early Admission Petition Form will also be required along with all completed materials. An Early Admission Petition Form should propose a full 2-semester course work plan to commence in the first semester as a registered MEng Student. Upon approval by the M.Eng Committee, this will be the Student's contract with ECE. Any subsequent changes to the agreed upon and approved plan will require further review and approval by the MEng Committee.
Early Admission Applicants will be required to schedule a 5 - 10 minute interview session with the ECE M.Eng Director in order to establish their plan and intentions. Interviews will be held during the month of February.

Students admitted for the Spring / Fall option as an Early Admission will have two different requirements:
Students would be required to enroll in ECE 5010 for two credits during their Early Admission semester during the fall. A requirement of this course is the submission of a Design Project Proposal, so this would not be required during the Admissions Process.
Students would be required to remain in Ithaca for the Summer and be enrolled in ECE 6931 and actively be participating in working on their Design Project with their Advisor. This would be for a minimum of at least two (2) credits.
